Planters

Planters continued:
Step 1 Clean a 1 Quart or 1/2 Gal milk jug, cut it in half. Be sure you're below the handle.

Step 2 Step 2

Step 2 Press the top of the jug into the "flower foam" about 3/4 - 1".

Step 3 Step 3

While you're pressing into the floral foam, angle the jug top to the right, breaking the foam off inside the bottle top. This will keep the soil inside the funnel-shaped part of your planter, and allow water to enter and exit.

Step 4 Step 4

Inside the jug you'll see a ridge. This will keep the jug top above the bottom of the base, and allow water in and out once you've inverted the top and placed it inside.

Step 5 Step 5

Invert the jug top with the foam inside and push into place. If you look around in your recycling bin, you can find many candidates for this project. The main things to keep in mind are that you'll need a ridge or bump in the base so water can enter and exit, and that the bottle is flexible and easy to cut. I like milk jugs because they're plentiful in our house, though I've made them from two liter juice jugs as well

Step 6 Step 6

With the floral foam in place, fill your new container with potting soil, add seed and water to about 1/3 full, then watch them grow!
Since the jugs are flexible, removing the plants is quite easy. Square jugs are also easier to line up in cold-frames and stack away when you're finished, too!
